How World Wi-Fi Is Using The Blockchain To Bring Free Wi-Fi To Everyone
It is estimated that in 2016 that mobile technology and services generated more than $3.3 trillion in economic value.
That’s more than 4.4% of global GDP.
People around the world are increasingly accessing the internet through mobile devices for both pleasure and business.
But these internet users face a challenge. Wi-Fi networks are mostly privately locked. Even when Wi-Fi is freely available it is often slow and expensive.
Blockchain startup World Wi-Fi wants to change that. Here’s how they plan to do it.
= Overview of World Wi-Fi =
The World Wi-Fi project wants to deliver a decentralised free Wi-Fi network available across the globe.
Owners of routers will be able to use the World Wi-Fi network in order to share their excess capacity. Users will be able to access this Wi-Fi.
People who want to rent this Wi-Fi capacity will be able to earn cryptocurrency for doing so. This is because the users of the free Wi-Fi will need to view a small ad.
= How does it Work =
A person who owns a router connects to the World Wi-Fi system. The router then creates an additional network which is available for guests to use.
This network is isolated from the main home network. Users who connect to the guest network will not have access to the main network.
The owner of the router can now set parameters for how the network is to be used. This can include the speed of the connection and the number of connections.
When someone wants to use free Wi-Fi they can connect to this guest network. They will then need to view targeted ads. These ads are designed to be strongly appealing to the users. To target the ads the World Wi-Fi system analyses factors like location, social media and search history.
The owner of the router will then earn income from the ads displayed. This income will depending on the number of ads that are viewed and who uses their network. Higher value users will result in greater income for the owner of the router.
= The Team Behind World Wi-Fi =
Co-founders of World Wi-Fi are Ilya Yashin and Yan Sepiashvili. Ilya has over seventeen years of experience working in Information Technology. Previously he co-founded Radius Wi-Fi and Ardenta.
Yan holds a PhD in Medicine and has been working for over ten years in Information Technology and Advertising. Along with Yashin he helped to co-found Radius Wi-Fi and Ardent.
= ICO Key Details =
The World Wi-Fi network is using an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) to fund its development and promotion. The key details about the World Wi-Fi ICO include:
Token name: WeToken
Start date of ICO: 18th March 2018
Token sale price: One WeToken = $USD0.10
